Hi, in this article we will be talking about the issues the characters in Shadowhunters face and why they are important to everyone.

Let begin with the one that is featured the most, racism and elitism. There is racism between downworlders and Shadowhunters, and between Shadowhunters and Mundanes. One hates the other and is treated like the scum of the earth. Downworlders are treated like evil, ugly, disgusting beings. Mundanes are treated as inferior to Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are the "superior" beings and everyone else is the scum of the earth.
Next up, sexuality. Yes it is treated as good in some parts, but it was originally looked down upon. It also talks a lot about the hate people in the LGBTQ+ community face on a daily basis, like being disowned, being stared at, just overal being treated wrong. Alec was disowned by his dad just for being gay, Helen and Aline both hid it because they were scared.
I have felt the hate many people feel in the LGBTQ+ community feel. I have been scared to tell more people than I have all because of, my best friend at that time who stopped talking to me because I told her I was bisexual.
It also talks about the effects guilt can have on a person. Raphael is guilty about him leaving his sister, and her thinking he ran away without saying goodbye. We also have Alec, the guilt of him killing Jocelyn led to serious consequences.
I have felt guilt for many things, as I'm sure many of you have. Guilt can lead to stupid descions, ones no one in thier right mind should be making. I have made some of my most regretted decisions out of guilt. I have cut some of my loved ones out of my life for guilt of something I did to someone, I cut important friends out of my life for the fact I did something wrong, but they said it was okay, I just felt so much guilt, and I wasn't worthy to be thier friend.
Speaking of these serious consequences, this leads to the topic of suicide. Alec almost killed himself from guilt, Iris's magic didn't help the guilt. He was hearing things wrong from Clary because of Iris's magic. He almost jumped off of a ledge, he would've died if Magnus didn't save him.
Suicide should be talked about more, it would help people like me realize you're not alone. I have experienced suicidal thoughts, and almost killed myself before. I was really close to ending it all, I was in a dark place and didn't see any reason to live. I was going to swallow a lot of pills and just lay in my room at night like I was sleeping so my family wouldn't be scared and take me to the hospital, I wanted to die without intervention. I would have killed myself if I hadn't found Shadowhunters and made the friends I did from this show. I hope that if anyone is having these feelings they would call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
Addiction, Izzy, Raphael, Aldertree. These are all important in our next topic. Aldertree gives Izzy yin fen, made from stuff that comes from vampires. She gets addicted to it, and also gets addicted to letting Raphael drink her blood. This would've cause major problems down the road if alec didn't stop it.
